{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation took place on the third lap when marshals were seen on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his compromised front wing
Racer's Instant Response
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two dudes dashing across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be permitted to just sprint across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were informed and made ready to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send officials were rescinded and a caution signal was raised in that zone"
"We are still investigating what transpired following that moment"
